IIE Evaluation Services and Projects

IIE provides research and program evaluation services to domestic and international governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and foundations to facilitate the collection of more comprehensive and policy-relevant data on international education, and to assess the impact of international fellowship and scholarship programs.

IIE research staff has extensive experience in carrying out all stages of a program evaluation, from assessing program process and implementation, to examining outcomes and program impact. Our evaluation work has focused primarily on assessing the effectiveness of international fellowship and scholarship programs that benefit undergraduate students, graduate (post-graduate) students, faculty, and mid-career professionals.  Most of our evaluations have required a multi-method approach that combines qualitative and quantitative analysis, but we also have the capability to design and conduct evaluations that use a random assignment design. Recent sponsors of IIE evaluations include:

  • Alcoa Foundation
  • Cox Foundation
  • National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST)
  • Hewlett Foundation
  • German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
  • U.S. Department of Education
  • U.S. Dept. of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education
  • U.S. Dept. of State, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs
Case Study: DAAD's RISE Program - Research Internships in Science and Engineering

RISE gives undergraduate students in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology and Physics the chance to spend a summer working with German doctoral students on serious research projects (more information about RISE can be found on DAAD's website).  Download findings from a new evaluation of RISE and RISE Pro, including feedback from U.S. and Canadian undergraduate students, young professionals and German graduate-level mentors below:
