Open Doors 2009

IIE released the 60th annual Open Doors Report on November 16, 2009 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter and Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Judith McHale gave introductory remarks.

U.S. Study Abroad

262,416 U.S. students studied abroad for academic credit in 2007/08, an 8.5% increase over the previous year.

International Scholars

113,494 scholars from 187 places of origin were teaching and conducting research at U.S. colleges and universities during the 2008/09 academic year.

Open Doors Trends

Over the past decade, the number of U.S. students studying abroad has increased by over 150 percent.

Emerging Directions in Global Education 2009 Conference, New Delhi

IIE presented an analysis of educational ties between the U.S. and India. A new IIE paper and book, slated for Spring 2010, will elaborate on this topic.
